EMD

European Minerals DayMinerals play an essential role in our lives with 70% of EU manufacturing production depending on mined substances. The construction, chemicals, automotive, aerospace and machinery sectors, which provide a total added value of € 1324 billion and 30 million jobs all depend on access to raw materials.

The EMD is a joint initiative by the European mineral raw materials industries:

  • CEMBUREAU, the European Cement Association
  • EuroGeoSurveys, the European Geological Surveys
  • ELO, the European Landowners Organisation
  • IMA-Europe, the European Industrial Minerals Association
  • UEPG, the European Aggregates Association

Following the success of the first European Minerals Day in 2007 - which welcomed more than 30,000 visitors in over 100 sites in 17 European countries - the European minerals sector and related organisations held a second European Minerals Day in 2009, with a special focus on biodiversity.

The EU Launch Event of the European Minerals Day 2009 took place on 14 May 2009 in Prague, inaugurated by European Commission Vice-President Mr Günter Verheugen, EU Commissioner for Industry & Enterprise.

The launch event consisted of two successful parts: the Inauguration Ceremony at the Obecni Dum in Prague in the presence of prominent EU and Czech governement officials, such as the Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade, Mr Tomas Hüner, the Deputy Minister of the Environment, Mr Frantisec Pelc, MEP Miroslav Ouzký, Chairman of the EP Environment Committee, Mr Jaroslav Mil, President of the Confederation of Czech Industry, Mr Sebastian Winkler, Head of Countdown 2010 (IUCN), the European partners representing the European minerals industries, geological surveys, Czech mining authorities, NGOs, media.

In the afternoon the programme continued with visit to the limestone quarry, the adjacent famous Karst cave, and the Museum of the Czech Karst and Geopark in Beroun, where the day ended in style with a nice walking dinner and a photo exhibition on nature and mining.
The objective of the day was to give the guests the opportunity to learn more about the mining activities, mineral applications, and the local biodiversity projects. (see VCS hand out attached here below for background information in English and Czech)

The Launch Event was kindly hosted by Lhoist and HeidelbergCement.
