CEMBUREAU contributes to Commission resource efficiency and jobs study

In July 2011, CEMBUREAU contributed to an ECORYS Nederland BV study commissioned by the European Commission (DG Environment) regarding the number of jobs dependent on the environment and resource efficiency improvements.

Waste Framework Directive (WFD): Commission issues R1 formula Guidelines

In July 2011, the European Commission published the “Guidelines on the interpretation of the R1 energy efficiency formula for incineration facilities dedicated to the processing of municipal solid waste”, in accordance with Annex II of the Waste Framework Directive (WFD, 2008/98/EC).

WFD: Commission draft Guidance on key provisions

A first draft of the European Commission’s Guidance on the interpretation of key provisions of the Waste Framework Directive (WFD, 2008/98/EC) has been made available for comment. In CEMBUREAU’s view, the draft is rather subjective and seems to favour dedicated waste incinerators.

TAC approves Commission draft Decision on calculation of recycling and recovery targets

In July 2011, experts in the Technical Adaptation Committee (TAC) approved the European Commission’s draft Decision on the application and calculation methods concerning the recycling and recovery targets under the Waste Framework Directive (WFD, 2008/98/EC).

First results of COSMOS project published

A report containing the initial results of the COSMOS project (COlloidal Silica Medium to Obtain Safe inert: the case of incinerator fly ash) has been published. The aim of this project, financed by the European Commission’s LIFE Programme, is to assess the potential industrial application of incinerator ashes treated with a colloidal silica medium.

Commission Roadmap to Resource Efficiency published

On 20 September 2011, the European Commission published its ‘Roadmap to a Resource Efficient Europe’. The Roadmap contains a series medium- (2020) and long-term (2050) resource efficiency objectives as well as the means needed for achieving them, including targets by 2013 and milestones for 2020.

Parliament votes on Raw Materials Strategy for Europe

On 13 September 2011, the European Parliament, in Plenary, voted on MEP Reinhard Bütikofer’s (Group of the Greens/European Free Alliance, Germany) own initiative report for an Effective Raw Materials Strategy for Europe.

Council conclusions on industrial competitiveness and resource efficiency

On 29 September 2011 the Competitiveness Council adopted conclusions in relation to industrial competitiveness in the light of resource efficiency.

Commission issues tender for improving resource efficiency

On 10 September 2011 the European Commission issued a call for tender with the aim of identifying opportunities for business to improve resource efficiency.

Commission technical consultation on end of waste fuels

On 8 September 2011, the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) launched a written technical consultation of the data collected in the interim report of the study on the suitability of different waste-derived fuels for end-of-waste status.
