CEMBUREAU responds to biowaste consultation

Earlier this month CEMBUREAU responded the European Commission’s Green Paper on the management of bio-waste in the EU, highlighting that co-processing in the cement industry is the optimum way of recovering energy and material from waste. It offers a safe and sound solution for society, the environment and the cement industry, by substituting non renewable resources with societal waste under strictlycontrolled conditions.

In its response, CEMBUREAU indicated that life-cycle assessment studies could play a greater role in the choice of the treatment of bio-waste diverted from landfills as the whole value chain would be considered rather than the final treatment option. In addition, the Association notes that energy recovery from biomass can make a valuable contribution to sustainable resource and waste management in the EU.
