On 8 March 2013, the UK Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) presented its new biomass carbon calculator, a prototype BEaC Model (Biomass Emissions and Counterfactual model). The aim of this model is to demonstrate the greenhouse gas impacts of different bioenergy pathways (taking into consideration the emissions associated with growing, processing and transporting the biomass, as well as the consequences of 'counterfactual' land-uses), as well as the amount of 'abandoned agricultural land' which could be available for bioenergy globally by 2050.
