ENVI vote on energy efficiency postponed

Save as PDF

The vote in the European Parliament’s Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) on Peter Liese’s (Group of the European People's Party [Christian Democrats], Germany) draft opinion on the proposal for a Directive on energy efficiency (EED) has been postponed until 20 December 2011. As highlighted in the October edition of the Eurobrief, the cement industry is affected by the proposal in two major respects:

  • the energy efficiency of buildings
  • energy efficiency in energy intensive industries

CEMBUREAU is concerned that the EED seems to mix energy efficiency and absolute energy savings. In the proposal, the focus is on energy savings, rather than real efficiency. CEMBUREAU proposes to streamline the proposal in the sense that energy efficiency is supported, and – where conflicting – absolute energy savings are not set at any cost.
