IEA hosts industry experts review workshop

On 6 October 2011, CEMBUREAU attend a workshop organised by the International Energy Agency (IEA) in Paris. A number of industry sectors were represented during the workshop including cement, steel, paper, aluminium and chemicals. One of the topics covered is the upcoming Energy Technology Perspectives 2012 (ETP). In this respect, the ETP’s industry chapter, which is sector specific, includes low and high demand scenarios, and will focus on 2000-2010. Its main assumptions include the following:

• Europe’s GDP will increase by 0.7% between 2030 and 2050
• There will be a significant decrease in the population of OECD countries
• With regard to emission reductions, under the low-demand scenario cement manufacturing emissions will fall by 39% by 2050 and by 44% under the high-demand scenario.
• Cement production is expected to increase by 50% by 2050
  • Production will peak in China in 2015 and then fall back
  • Production is expected to peak in India after 2050
• The cement industry is the sector where the greatest difference is registered in terms of energy consumption (thanks to alternative fuels).

Sector specific breakout sessions were also organised. During the cement sector breakout session a number of points were discussed, including the potential role which could be played by the IEA in terms of informing governments of the need to provide funding for research for both Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and new products.
