In July 2011, the Parties to MARPOL Annex VI represented in the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) adopted mandatory measures to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) from international shipping. These measures include making the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) mandatory for new ships, and the Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP) for all ships. The IMO is also considering market-based measures, such as emissions trading or a global levy, to help further cut emissions from international shipping. The European Commission has reacted positively to this news.
