ITRE votes on taxation of energy products

On 6 February 2012, the Industry, Trade and Research Committee (ITRE) of the European Parliament adopted Béla Kovács’ (Non-attached Members, Hungary) draft opinion on restructuring the Community framework for the taxation of energy products and electricity. The opinion was adopted with 27 votes in favour, 25 against and 2 abstentions. This follows the adoption in the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee (ENVI) of Kathleen Van Brempt’s (Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament, Belgium) opinion on 31 January 2012.

It must be kept in mind that, on taxation matters, such EP opinions are purely advisory.
