REACH: proposed review of 91 substances under draft CoRAP

On 21 October 2011 the European Chemicals Agency (ECHAⁱ) submitted its first draft Community rolling action plan (CoRAP) to the Member State Competent Authorities and the ECHA Member State Committee. The CoRAP specifies the substances that are to be evaluated under REACHⁱ over a period of three years. After the first year, the plan will be updated to include substances for the additional year as well as any revision to the substances that were included in the second and third year of the original plan.

ECHA and the Member States selected substances for the CoRAP using risk-based criteria which cover hazard information, exposure information and tonnage of substances. For example, a hazardous substance with controlled exposure can be of less priority than a less hazardous substance of major exposure. In the first draft plan, ECHA proposes the review of 91 substances, including silicon dioxide (for 2012) and titanium dioxide (for 2014). The Member State Committee will prepare an opinion on the draft plan in February 2012, with ECHA hoping to adopt the final CoRAP on the basis of this opinion by the end of February.
