EU emissions of sulphur oxides (SO2) fell by 20% in 2008, according to an annual emission inventory report published in July. The findings confirm a trend observed last year. The European Environment Agency (EEA) has attributed the decline to lower emissions from public power plants, especially in Spain, Bulgaria and Poland. Road transport and energy production remain the highest emitting sectors.
This really confirms CEMBUREAU in its position that existing policies do suffice to reduce effectively SO2 emissions without the need to put in place a trading system.
