CLP

CLPRegulation (EC) No 1272/2008 of 16 December 2008 on classification, labelling and packaging of substances and mixtures was published in the Official Journal on 31 December 2008 (CLP Regulation) and entered into force on 20 January 2009.  This Regulation implements the GHSi (United Nations Globally Harmonised System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals) in Europe.  The new classification system will become mandatory for cement clinker as of 1 December and for cement as of 1 June 2015. Of particular interest to the cement industry are:

  • page 143 which refers to the requirements for labelling cement and cement containing preparations in relation to Cr(IV) and Cr(VI) reducing agents
  • and page 145 where ready-mixed cement and concrete in the wet state are mentioned (when supplied to the general public without packaging, they need to be accompanied by a copy of the labelling elements in accordance with Art 17).

The requirements regarding child resistant fastenings and tactile warning labels (page 145) are not applicable to cement.
